  • Program Objective: The objective of the program is to ensure the preparation of a competitive workforce for the maritime transport service sector, specifically to train a deck rating seafarer who will be capable of performing the following tasks: safe operation of deck equipment and mechanisms, safe navigational watchkeeping, participation in mooring and unmooring operations, conducting preventive and repair works on deck mechanisms, participating in cargo operations on board, steering the ship, maintenance and cleaning of ship’s compartments, performing painting work on board, and ensuring safety on the ship.

a. Basic education

  • b. Compliance with the “Seafarers’ Health Condition Standards” requirements (Order No. 01 of the Maritime Transport Agency of the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia, February 26, 2014).

Participate in the safe operation of deck equipment and mechanisms.

Participate in safe navigational watches.

Participate in mooring and towing operations.

Participate in preventive and repair work on deck mechanisms.

Participate in cargo operations on board the vessel.

Perform painting work on the vessel.

Ensure safety on the vessel.

  • The graduate will receive an educational certificate and documentation regarding the completion of practical training. Subsequently, they must undergo certification to obtain the necessary certificates. Based on the received documents, they will take an exam at the Maritime Transport Agency of the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia to obtain a work diploma.
  • According to the “Mariners’ Education and Certification” law of Georgia, upon fulfilling the certification requirements and having recognized sea service experience, the individual, after receiving a work license (qualification certificate), will be eligible for employment on commercial, passenger, auxiliary fleet vessels, fishing, and other vessels as a deckhand, as well as in public or private institutions related to the maritime transport and operations sector.
  • The awarding of professional qualifications is the prerogative of the LLC “Meridian Maritime Training Center.”
  • To obtain the qualification, the individual must accumulate the credits specified by the modules outlined in the educational program and pass the qualification exam.

Learning Outcomes Corresponding to the Assigned Classification:

  • Based on the framework document of the “Maritime Transport Services,” the educational institution – “Meridian Maritime Training Center” has developed a professional educational program – “Deck Department Operations,” which includes general and mandatory/sector-specific professional modules.

A person will be awarded credits based on the confirmation of learning outcomes, which can be achieved through the following:

  1. a) Recognition of learning outcomes achieved within the framework of prior formal education;
    b) Recognition of learning outcomes achieved through non-formal education in accordance with the procedures established by Georgian legislation;
    c) Confirmation of learning outcomes through assessment methods. There are two types of assessment: developmental and summative.
  • Developmental assessment will be carried out using both points and passing principles.
  • Summative assessment will be based solely on the passing principles (competence confirmation), and it admits two types of outcomes:
    • Learning outcome confirmed;
    • Learning outcome not confirmed.

In case of a negative result in summative assessment, the student has the right to request additional assessment of learning outcomes before completing the program. The assessment method(s) are provided as recommendations in the modules.

The program aims to develop eight key competencies (communication in the mother tongue, communication in a foreign language, mathematical competence, digital competence, ability to learn independently, interpersonal, intercultural, social and civic competencies, entrepreneurship, and cultural expression), which are essential for fostering professional and competitive personnel.

One of the eight key competencies – the development of the native/professional educational language – will be evaluated by each vocational education teacher in the teaching-learning process. The evaluation will focus on both oral and written communication skills, specifically adherence to spelling and grammar rules, within the context of the following competencies:

Moral Speech (Moral Expression):

  1. Adherence to the time limit for speaking/presenting;
  2. Use of appropriate professional vocabulary;
  3. Formulation of thoughts clearly, understandably, and coherently;
  4. Providing adequate examples and arguments;
  5. Adequate use of non-verbal communication tools characteristic of oral reasoning (e.g., gestures, pauses in speech, variation in voice tone).

Spelling:

  1. Correct use of conjunctions;
  2. Proper use of basic punctuation marks (period, question mark, exclamation mark);
  3. Appropriate use of professional vocabulary;
  4. Elimination of typical stylistic errors in writing;
  5. Avoidance of unnatural phrases and vocabulary for the language.

Barbarisms, Jargon:

Transmitting information in a logical, clear manner, following the specific activity to be performed.

Awarding Professional Qualification:
The granting of a professional qualification is the prerogative of LCC. Meridian Maritime Training Center.

In order to obtain the qualification, the individual must accumulate the credits specified in the educational program’s modules and pass the qualification exam.

For the Education of Students with Special Educational Needs (SEN) and Disabilities (PWD)

To ensure the inclusion of individuals with disabilities and special educational needs in vocational education programs, individuals will be allowed to participate in modules without meeting the module prerequisites. The credits defined in the vocational education program will only be awarded if the corresponding learning outcomes are verified, and the qualification will be granted in accordance with the rules set out in paragraph 11.

The vocational education program includes six (6) general modules, totaling 17 credits, and nine mandatory professional/sectoral modules, totaling 75 credits. To be awarded a qualification, the individual must accumulate 92 credits.

The duration of the program is 63 academic weeks.

The Georgian Language (A2) module is mandatory only for vocational students who do not have documented competency in the Georgian language. For these students, the educational program begins with the Georgian language module, which is allocated 15 credits. The duration of this module is 10 academic weeks, and accordingly, the total volume of the program is 107 credits.
